Problems with opening word document file attachment

Everytime I go to open my email sent from a trusted source who has attached
Word document file it keeps opening in Microsoft PowerPoint and flags up a
message cannot open document as another user in powerpoint. Please would
someone be able to explain how I can resolve this. Is it to do with my
settings and if so how do i change them in order to receive the attachments.
