Problems with page numbers.

I am struggling to insert page numbers into my 345 page thesis in
continuous manner. Word seems to start and stop the numbering at its
own wish within the document. Can somebody help please?

My guess would be that you have section breaks in the document and the
footers (or headers depending where you put the page fieldcode) are not set
to Same As Previous. This is resulting in the field restarting at 1 again.
Does this appear to be what is happening or are the page numbers just
inconsistent in some other way?

If, as Terry suggested, the document has section breaks, use the Page Number
Format dialog box in each section to specify that page numbering should
"Continue from previous section."

Note that if the document has continuous sections limited to part of a page,
you'll have to insert a temporary section break (Ctrl+Enter) in those
sections to see all headers and footers.

To display the Page Number Format dialog box: In Word 97-2003, click View |
Header and Footer. On the Footer and Header toolbar, click the Format Page
Number button. Use the Next (and/or Previous) buttons to move between
sections.

In Word 2007, double-click the header (or footer); Word displays the Header
& Footer Tools, Design tab on the ribbon. Click Page Number, and then click
Format Page Numbers. Use the Previous Section / Next Section buttons to move
between sections.
