problems with Russian language in embedded Excel worksheet

I am running only mac in windows environment (server WIN2K,
workstations WIN2K and WIN XP).
We have many Word documents which have embedded Excel sheets. We use
these files for financial calculation.
Most of the time these files are created on WINTEL machine using Word
2003.
When I try to open these files on MAC (OS X 10.4.1, Word 2004), I can
read no problem all Word documents with Exception of embedded Excel
sheet. In this table English part is OK, russian - some rubbish.
I double click on the table, it opens Excel 2004. Now in Excel window
all text is clear. But after I close Excel - in the original Word
document nothing changes. Only the table grows and does not fit page
anymore.
if I change fonts in Excel sheet and close it, it looks OK, but now
Windows users can not read it.
Excel part and Word part of the document use the same font (Arial or
Times New roman).
what can this be?
Or must I identify the problem more clearly?

I think we understand the problem. But I am certainly not sure how to fix
it.

The problem is a difference between the character sets in the fonts on the
Windows and Mac machines.

Many people in OS 10.4 are having severe problems with fonts. If you read
back through this group you will find references to people running cache
cleaner utilities to clean the OS X Font Cache. You may solve your problem
by looking at those posts and trying the same fix.

Hope this helps
