Problems With Saving 2003 Microsoft Word Documents

I am having problems with losing information that I am working on. Twice now
I have lost a document I was working on because when I go to save it, and
error an error message pops up asking if I want to continue and save. If I
click no, it takes me to another box where it says:
"File Conversion - Rescued Document - Warning saving as a text file will
cause all formatting, pictures, & objects to be lost." Then below that it
says, "Text Encoding" and I have 3 options: windows default, MS-DOS, other
encoding." Further down it says "allow character substitution". So I chose
the Windows Default option and that took me back to the original box where I
forgot what it asked but I had to choose Yes or No again. So the next time I
checked Yes. Well, it closed out of the document and it just disapeared from
my computer! When I opened up autosave in word, it said "Word has
experienced and error in trying to open the file." Then it gives me some
suggestions (check the file permissions for the document or drive, make sure
there is sufficient free memory & disk space, & open the file with text
recovery converter. I have no idea where the document went! I check the
recycle bin but I guess its gone. The document was saved on a USB drive but
I cannot find it on there anymore. Can you tell me why it is doing this or
what I need to do to fix this problem?
Thanks so much.

Are you dealing with a .txt file, or do you have Plain Text selected as the
default Save format?

The default save says word document. This has only happened to me twice. I
was working on a research paper and every now & then I will hit the save icon
in the top left hand corner to make sure I am saving as I go along. I had
been working on my paper this afternoon and had no problem saving it for the
first 3 or 4 times. Just out of no where, I go to save & it won't let me
save it and it deletes it completly from the system. I think it got moved to
my documents because I have something in there that says rescued document but
when I open it up it has a lot of ????? everywhere and it is in notepad. Do
you know how I can recover it and prevent this from happening?
Thank you.

A recovered document should be opened automatically the next time you start
Word.

When I open up microsoft word, I can see the name of my document on the right
side under Open. When I click on it, it won't allow me to open it. When I
go to my computer and to my USB drive to open it there, it doesn't exist
there anymore. Do you have any idea why?
Thanks,
Allison

You should never save directly to or open directly from any type of
removable media. Always save to and open from the HD.

I have a copy saved to the HD as well. It is just not as updated. This USB
is fairly new. Are you saying this won't happen if it is a document opened
from the HD?

I'm saying that you risk losing a document if you save it to removable media
or work on it from same.

Ok well thanks. I guess I learned my lesson. Do you think it is a removable
media problem and not a computer problem?

It is a tough lesson that Microsoft should warn users about. But it is the
number one way to lose a document. Unfortunately, it is inconsistent: it
doesn't corrupt the document every time you use removable media. If it was
consistent, then users would quickly realise and only ever make the mistake
once.

Back in the days of floppy drives, it was a very common problem.

However, we would all like the problem resolved!

Can you please help me from going insane? For whatever reason, my Microsoft
Word Application is having trouble saving documents. It will save them but
typically is taking around 45 MINUTES to save a document. It wants to save
the document to a Temporary Internet File, but I want the document to be
saved in a particular folder. Here is where the trouble starts. MS Word takes
like 10 minutes to digest each file directory, where I am trying to save the
file. I've been using MS Office for over 15 years so I know how to "save" a
document. I've tried repairing MS Office with the original CD and have also
gone into Word and use the "detect & repair." Still 45 minutes to save each
document is unacceptable. Do you have a solution? I'm ready to abandon MS
Office altogether and switch to Macintosh. Solutions???? I'm all ears.

If you use File, Open in Word, are you able to navigate round the various
folders OK.

If you open Windows Explorer, check that you don't have any old defunct
drive mappings set up.

Hi Terry,
actually, no I'm not able to navigate around the various folders okay. It is
taking MS Word like 10 minutes to open up any folder successfully. What is
the solution here? Please advise.
thank you!

Still awaiting a reply from Microsoft Support. My MS Word is still taking
upwards of 45 minutes to try and save a document or open up different
folders.
A rescue/resolution would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Carhughes,

If you're referring to posting here as waiting on Microsoft support, it's not :) The discussion groups are generally peer support.

Are you opening documents from attachments in email rather than saving first to your hard disk? If so, the email app is likely
using the Temporary Internet files folder for opening the document.

If you have any disconnected network drives you can get delays, but usually not 45 minutes.
