Problems with the Excel "Select Objects" tool

I am having trouble with the “Select Objects†tool in Excel 2007. On the
ribbon I go to Home / Editing group / Find and Select / Select Objects. When
that tool is activated I can “lasso†multiple text boxes or objects and make
global changes to them. BUT if I want to make changes to text boxes/objects
located several rows apart, I find that the tool is very sluggish to scroll
the window to the additional areas.
It is not acceptable to use the “Selection Pane†tool because my document
contains hundreds of text boxes. I can not determine from the names which
ones I need to select.

Also it is not acceptable to "Control Click" all of them, try doing that to
over 1000 text boxes or objects every time you want to select a few hundred.

After I have selected multiple objects they do not remain selected when I
right click to change text box formatting. Very annoying. I have discovered
that holding the control key down will get around that problem but not
intuitive.
Before my upgrade to Excel 2007 I could use this tool to quickly select
hundreds or thousands of text boxes or other items. Now it is impossible. I
am using a high end computer with a fast processor and 8 gig of ram. Still,
there is no ability to scroll windows with items selected. Am I missing
something? Is this an Excel program bug?
