Problems with the numbered list items positioning

I have a problem with positioning of numbered text, when I create a one
numbered list:
1. Text
2. Text
3. Text
and after some regular text another numbered list like this.
4. Text
5. Text
6. Text

I have also created a new custom style for these numbered items.
Now I choose the command “Restart at 1†or “Set Numbering Value...†to set
the numbers of the second list from “1†to “3â€. Sometimes nothing happens.
Sometimes “Word†sets the first number of the second list to 1, 2 and 3, BUT
the positioning of the left indent of the list changes (it goes from 0 to 6,3
mm). When I set it back to 0 mm or change any style formatting, the first
number of the second list goes to “4†again.

A quick fix has been to restart the list with a LISTNUM field, but Word 2007
seems to be a bit unpredictable when it comes to LISTNUM fields,
unfortunately.

If you could set this up as a multilevel list, letting higher
levels restart lower ones, that would be the easiest solution.

Before trying multilevel lists, check the settings of your numbered style;
in particular, you may want to right-click the list and choose the Adjust
List Indents command from the context menu. Make sure that the indentation
settings are correct. Right-click again, click Styles, and click Update
<style name> to Match Selection. Now does Word let you restart the numbering
properly?
