Problems with the way message is displayed

For a few weeks now, I have noticed that my messages are being displayed very
strangely. I see this when someone replies to me and I can see my original
message.

In every instance (it doesn't matter who is responding), my message always
has extra lines in it. For instance, instead of there being just the one
space inbetween paragraphs, it adds an additional 3 lines (for a total of 4)!
If I double space (such as inbetween the last paragraph and my signature),
instead of being 2 lines, there's 5.

Speaking of my signature, that's messed up as well. Normally, my signature
looks like this:

My Name
832-555-1212 (O)
832-555-1213 (C)

However, it inserts an extra line inbetween My Name and the first phone
number, a line inbetween the 2 phone numbers, and 3 lines between the second
phone number and the quote.

What on earth is going on? And how do I fix it? Thanks in advance.

it's caused by the mail client the recipient uses - you would need to use
Shift+Enter instead of enter or plain text to avoid it. See

Is this a fairly new problem? I've never had this problem until just a few
weeks ago. At least that's when I first started noticing it. I certainly
don't remember it with Outlook 2003.

I noticed that this is a problem when composing messages in HTML. What if I
composed them in Rich Text? I don't know what the difference is between
those, but would that solve the problem? That article you linked did not
mention that as a solution.

Don't use Rich text unless everyone uses outlook. The problem is not new to
outlook 2007 but its more noticeable because word is everyone's editor - the
outlook editor uses <br>when you hit enter and in HTML that means single
spacing. Word uses <p> when you hit enter and that is double spacing when
rendered in a browser.

I think the best thing is to not worry about it - email is an imperfect
medium and things don't always look exactly the same on every computer. It
works correctly in many email clients - including hotmail and yahoo online -
but not in gmail and other basic web clients. If you are sending
newsletters then you should use shift+enter so they look nice - but as long
as normal correspondence is readable, don't worry about it (or use plain
text).
