Problems with upgrading from Tiger to Snow Leopard on Word 2004?

john

I have OS 10.4.11 and use it with Office 2004 and EndNote 9 for a book
I'm in the middle of. Everything is stable and I would prefer not to
change until the book is finished.
However, I'm having problems with some other software, and their help
people say that I need to upgrade to Snow Leopard. If I do:
(1) will it adversely effect Office 2004, especially Word 2004 and
EndNote 9 (which contains more than 500 references)?
(2) can I just do an OS upgrade or do I need the more expensive MacBox
set that Apple recommends for Tiger users?
(3) will it adversely effect MYOB, which has all my accounts?

Many thanks

John

First issue:
Does your Mac have an Intel Processor? If not, *no* Snow Leopard upgrade is
'recommended' because Snow Leopard will not run on a PPC based Mac. Unless
you have an Intel Mac [with plenty of RAM] all else is moot.

Second issue:
Apple "recommends" the Mac Box Set because they make more money off of it.
Don't get me wrong... It's a very good value if you need/want the iWork &
iLife apps bundled with Snow Leopard, but the OS is the same regardless of
whether you by the Set or just the SL upgrade.

Third issue:
None of the product you're asking about is Microsoft brand with the
exception of Office 2004, so the only honest answer re Endnote, MYOB, etc.
is that you'd have to check with the developers of those apps. Most likely
they will recommend upgrades as well, but that's the best source.

Fourth issue:
Office 2004 - fully updated - runs fine on any version of OS X including
Snow Leopard. If you do upgrade the OS, however, it's recommended that you
reinstall & update Office rather than 'migrating' it. Check back here for
details if need be.

Final issue:
It sounds like what the unidentified "other software" company really is
telling you is that they want you to upgrade to a newer version which only
runs on SL & that they no longer intend to support what you currently
have... Otherwise they'd suggest that you update [not upgrade] & they'd work
with you to fix whatever that version is.

Very many thanks, Bob, for most helpful response.

1. Yes, my iMac does have an Intel Processor with enough RAM.

2. I don't need upgrades to iLife and iWork.

3. I'll check with them.

4. I hadn't realized this. Grateful for further details.

5. The other software is MacSpeech Dictate. I bought V1.1 and it
wasn't v. good. I upgraded to V1.3, which is much better at voice
recognition, but it lost functionality (it keeps throwing up error
messages when I use it with Word). The MacSpeech people said either
change to US keyboard (I'm UK) or else upgrade to Snow Leopard and
they would supply V1.5 for free, which seems generous of them.

Again, many thanks
