Problems with Word 6.0

Can anyone help please? I downloaded an application
written in word. I couldn't open it using MS Works word
processing so I borrowed a copy of Windows Office with
Word from my father in law. It is version 6.0 I can't use
it to open the document. all I get is a bunch of squares
and funky text. I went and downloaded Windows Word viewer
and it opens the document just fine. But I can't edit
anything with it;. How can I fix this?

Thanks to anyone who can help!!! :)

Buy a current version of Word that will open and edit the document.

And if you don't want to spend money on that, download and install
OpenOffice.

And after attempting to use it, and finding it has done inscrutable things
to your entire computer, reformat your drive and reinstall Windows and
everything else again...

A Word aficionado I presume, and therefore a little biased... I've never
had any troubles with OO, nor with its freeware predecessor StarOffice.
Problems can arise if you try to uninstall OO through Add/Remove Programs;
then Windows will mess things up. Instead use OO's own uninstall program
(like you should do with any program).

I made several honest attempts to load, use and understand Star Office and
later incarnations.

If they wrote a proper uninstaller and registered it properly then
Add/Remove programs would call it. But they buggered that up like a lot of
other simple operating system interactions.

Please respond in the same thread on this newsgroup. Make sure you
include details of your application and Windows versions, and whether
or not you have included any service pack updates.
