Problems with Word

I have Microsoft Office 2003 package, using Vista.
Just last week on opening documents in word (and Excel) the page continually
flickers as if it is constantly restarting. The Vista version of the
sand-timer keeps appearing and disappearing.
It was working alright the week before.
