I see similar problems with Word 2003 and network printers and I suspect that
this will be a frequent thread.
A friend of mine has the following scenario:
Windows 98SE with an attached HP3847 printer via USB is "Network Shared"
4 port switch/firewall
HP ZD8000 laptop with Windows XP SP2 and Office 2003 with latest updates.
Dell D600 Windows XP with Office XP SP3
Original problem.
Setting default printer to the Networked HP3847 caused major problems with
Word and Excel on the ZD8000.
Word continually looped and crashed after a single paste from a web page.
Just restarting word would crash in 15 seconds.
Excel would refuse to open an older worksheet from the Win98 machine.
Outlook express on the ZD8000 had absolutely no problems printing on the
Win98 shared printer.
After numerous attempts, the problem was traced to an HPZPMxxx.DLL file in a
\3\ directory off of the system32 tree. Renaming the file would allow Word
and Excel to work correctly, but then the printer was unavailable. I'm not
positive as to the numeric value after the ZPM but it may have been 310.
The Dell D600 with Office XP had no problems with the printer with Word 2002
or Excel 2002, but it was never set as a default printer.
A subsequent re-install of the printer driver on the ZD8000 has allowed Word
2003 to not crash and Excel 2003 to load the problem worksheet. Word 2003 is
unable to print on this network printer with an error the the printer is
unavailable (yes, it is the network printer that was selected, and not the
local printer). Excel also gives a strange error about 'not enough memory'
when attempting to use the same printer.
Outlook express on the ZD8000 still has no problems printing to that same
network printer.
Office Update has been executed, so all of the latest and greatest are
applied.
Hp seems to think that there isn't a problem with this printer driver and
are pointing the finger back at Microsoft.
The module that caused the crash HPZPMxxx.DLL seems to be a user interface
Printer properties file.
During one of the re-install printer driver steps, the printer properties
had one tab that appeared to be in Hebrew, but this has not been seen since.
What exactly are Word 2003 and Excel 2003 attempting to do with the printer?
Is there a patch to remedy this behavior?
Are we doomed to all have local printers?
