Problems with writing

Addu

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) I have some problems with writing in word. It started when I got an update. Now when I write it's like the computer copies a part of what I have just written and adds it at the end of it. like this : see if there are re are. here it has just copied the end of there and are and added it to the end. I have tried reinstalling word and not getting the new updates, I have tried disk repair and permissions repair, i have tried to throw out the preference thingy and nothing works. I am in the middle of writing my thesis so this couldn't have come at a worse time!
Has anyone had similar problems as I?

Let's try a diagnostic test, to see if this stops it:

1) Quit Word and re-start the computer.

2) Now, Launch Word while holding down the Shift key.

This disables all add-ins and preference files.

Is the problem still happening?

If so, we need to find out which application is causing it.

Hope this helps

I tried this but the problem still is happening. It doesn't happen in each word that I write but at least once in every two lines. Before I updated I had version 12.2.0 but I updated to 12.2.4. I also started the computer up and held down the command (the apple sign) and s and then wrote fsck - fy or some thing like that.

Sorry: When carrying out a diagnostic test, it is really important that you
do "Just the test procedure".

If you do a heap of other things as well, we can't get a reading from the
test.

When you do exactly this:

1) Quit Word and re-start the computer.

2) Now, Launch Word while holding down the Shift key.

Is the problem still happening? If it is, it wasn't Word that's causing it,
and we need to get a list of the running applications in your system.

3) If you then quit and re-start Word normally, does the problem change?
How?

If the problem goes away on Step 2, and comes back on Step 3, then the
problem is either the Normal Template or the preferences in your User ID.

If the problem does not go away at Step 2, then we need to see a list of the
applications running on your system. Start Activity Monitor, go to File
menu and choose Save... It will save a text file of all the processes
running on the system. Normally, to save space you can cut out any process
above launchd in the list: they're system processes.

Something like this is good:

Free Memory: 12.85 GB
Wired Memory: 823.4 MB
Used Memory: 3.14 GB
Inactive Memory: 763.7 MB

I suggest that you be extremely careful about running a File System Check
(fsck). If there is actually something wrong with the file system, the
system can become unable to start. Make sure you have a complete and
verified backup before you try "Hero Mode" repairs like that :)

Hope this helps

I have found what the problem was!

I did as you told only opened it and held down the shift button. But since that didn't work I started to think about what applications could be causing it. And when I woke up this morning I thought of the spelling application I have. It is an icelandic one and it has never really worked on my computer. I tried to turn it off and voila the problem is solved.

I thank you very much for your help.

If your iMac has 10.5.8, then you have Mac OS X Leopard. The .8 in
10.5.8 means there have been 8 updates applied to the base 10.5.0
version. Mac OS X Snow Leopard is version 10.6 which you do not
currently own, but can be purchased for $29 from any Apple Store.
As far as your question of benefits to upgrading, yes there are some
new features and fixes in Mac OS X Snow Leopard† that many will find
beneficial. You do need to be sure your iMac meets the system
requirements, which mainly is that it contains an Intel processor.
For your final question on Word, you have some options. Microsoft has
released Microsoft Office for OS X, which can be purchased in an Apple
Store. Also you can use OS X's Boot Camp feature if you would like to
run Word natively in Windows. Finally, you can look into
virtualization software. Some examples of these are VMWare Fusion, and
Parallels.
Lots of bad reviews. Should I wait to upgrade?
In my opinion, research the programs you are going to use most
frequently and see if there is any mention about them being upgraded
for snow leopard, many applications have been upgraded already, and
more are on their way. It's entirely possible that most, if not all of
the applications you use have already been upgraded and are ready to
use. If not, wait a little while, or find a replacement product from a
company that responds faster.
At the very least, the apps that http://www.poker-rake.ru/ have been
upgraded already tell you a bit about the efficiency of the company
you received the software from, and tells you if you can rely on them
for speedy updates or not, which is often one of the most important
parts of any software company.
And with that said, many applications that worked for 10.5 (Leopard)
will work fine on 10.6 (Snow Leopard) such as Firefox, VLC, and
various messenger apps, so also look up if the application doesn't
need to be upgraded at all, perhaps it works as it is.
Hope this helps. =)

Hi Arnrún:

Many thanks for that! The English version of SpellCatcher can produce
similar unexplained features in Word, also.

Cheers
