The following procedure in Word 2003 Help is supplied as a response to the
help topic:
"Turn off the task pane on startup"
it advises users to:
"Use this procedure to prevent the task pane from opening automatically when
you start Microsoft Office Word 2003."
"Close all documents and WordMail messages.
On the Tools menu, click Options.
On the View tab, clear the Startup Task Pane check box.
Exit Word."
Please note that "Options" cannot be accessed when " ... all documents and
WordMail messages." are closed.
