Process receipts on arrival

Regarding Tools > Options > Email Options > Tracking Options > Process
receipts on arrival

The description of this option on the MS web site is that when enabled, it
will
Delete notifications of delivered and read messages

When I get a read receipt notification in my Inbox, however, it stays there
after I've read it even though this setting is enabled.
Is this normal? What exactly does this setting do?

I think that means it deletes the notifications YOU are sending out, so they
don't show up in your sent items.
