Processes are not ending when application is closed in Office 2003

I am having trouble with Office 2003. I am running Windows XP. I went to
task manager the other day and noticed that even though I had closed the
application, I still had multiple instances of Word and excel running.
What's causing this and what can I do to fix it.
Thanks.

Do you have any add-ins that keep Word/Excel running in the background? Do
you have an AV program that integrates with Office programs?

No.

If you use Task Manager to kill the instances, do you get an error message
the next time you open the program?

No add-ins or AV programs.
