Processing Updates does not extend the finish date. Why?

Why do I have to utilize the update schedule feature in order to update my
finish date for assigments?
Why does this not occur as part of the update process.

MSPS 2K3 SP3
SQL 2K5 SP 3
Windows 2K3 SP2
