"Product Compliance Check" failed

Every time I try to setup my freshly installed office xp
standard software, I'm stuck with an error message after
inputting the product key. I get a window titled "Product
Compliancew Check" where I am told "Setup failed to
locate a valid qualifying product on your machine. Please
select the drive where a qualifying product can be
found." At this point I select the C drive and click OK.
Finally I get the error message reading "Error 1608.
Setup was unable to locate a qualifying product." When I
click OK, the office program I was trying to setup closes
and I have to start all over again to reach teh same
frustrating end. What do I need to do?!

You have an upgrade version of Office standard. It is looking for either
Office 97 or Office 2000 to verify that you qualify for the upgrade package.
When it asks the next time, put in the Office 97 or 2000 CD in the CD drive,
point the installer to it and when it says okay, take out the 97/2000 CD,
put back in the XP CD and continue the installation.
