Product key for different language

Gerald Vogt

Just ordered a second copy of Office 2004 for Mac and with the shipment
confirmation of the shop I have noticed that I have ordered the wrong
language version and not the English one. As I already have a copy of
the English Office 2004 I was wondering if it is possible to use the
product key from the new non-english version for an installation from
the english cd. In other words: can I use (technically and legally) the
license which I have bought now to install a second copy of the english
version or do I have to return the non-english version to swap it for
the english one? I would rather save me the hassle of returning if it
was not necessary...

Thx, Gerald

Hi Gerald:

With some limitations, what you propose is "legal".

However, I suspect you will find that the English CD will not install with a
non-English product key (or vice-versa). The product keys enable specific
builds of the software, and the build is different for each language.

Cheers

I guess you could _try_ but I believe it is referred to as a *key* for a
reason:) Keep in mind, also, that once you break the seal on the new package
the vendor is unlikely to accept it back for refund or exchange. Another
consideration is that of support based on the new key.

It used to work just fine for Office X. I never tried with 2004
though...

That's a good one. ;-)

I know for a fact that the keys for Windows XP are exchangeable. I have
installed a non-english windows version with a english product key and
it works fine. The license agreement does not really define, what the
"Software" is. It applies to the software which came with the EULA. But
in a narrow sense that would even mean you cannot use the same language,
same version CD of another packet with another key not printed on that
very package. The bottom question is probably, does "software" mean
"Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac" or does this also include the specific
localization?

Anyway, I suppose it is better to bite the apple and return the wrong
package. Better then opening the shrink wrap and finding out it does not
work with the different key...
