Product key for new installation

Version: 2008

I have a new Macbook and a Office 2008 for Mac home and student CD to download onto it but I can't work out what the product key is on the packaging. There are number by barcodes on sticker on the box but none of these work when typed in (in any forms, 0 and O and B and 8 etc don't make any difference).
Is there any other reason I can't work out when the code is and if not how can I install the software.
I am a computer dummy and have no idea what to do now.
Thanks

I don't understand why you are thinking you will "download onto".

Suggest you crack open the booklet that is delivered with the product
called "Install Guide". In that booklet you will find phone numbers at
Microsoft you can phone in your country to get help with this. In my
booklet it is on Page 5.

Oops. I was looking the wrong booklet. They do not have a phone number
in the booklet I have for Office. they refer me to
support.microsoft.com and from there find a phone number. I suspect it
might be hard to find a number as they don't make it easy.

The other approach is contact the vendor from whom you bought the
product and ask that they allow you to return this (apparently)
defective product and send you another.

The Product Key is usually found on an orange or yellow sticker affixed to
the envelope the disk comes in. It's probably on the side of the envelope
where the flap is.

Nothing on the outer packaging is used for installation.

P.S. -- With the Home & Student Edition there should be 3 separate stickers,
each Key representing a separate License. Use whichever of the 3 you wish,
but it's a good idea to make a notation somewhere as to which one you use.
If you use the same Key on different networked Macs you can't run any Office
programs on the one while any Office programs are running on the other if
the same Key was used for both installs.

I usually identify each key as A, B, C & use a sticky note indicating which
Key was used on which systems. Put the sticky on the envelope along with the
Keys & keep the disk in the sleeve in a safe place. It not only helps avoid
conflicting installs but also makes it easier to reuse the right Key if you
ever have to re-install Office.
