Product Key not working for Microsoft Office Standard Edition 2003

I am trying to activate/use Microsoft Office Standard Edition 2003.
I am prompted for the Product Key, which I find on the back of the laptop
under Certificate of Authenticity.
I have tried entering the key for Powerpoint, Word, and Excel. I get the
error message 'You have not entered a valid product key'.
I have checked, I don't seem to have a trial version (and was told it wasn't
when I purchased the laptop). I have a Gateway Media Center Powerhouse,
Wndows XP.

That is more likely to be the product key for Windows itself. Have a look
in the documentation for the machine and see if the key is on a
leaflet/slip/whatever.

Look at that sticker again. You'll find that's for Windows, not Office. I'd
suggest calling Gatrway and asking them where you 'll find the product key
for Office.
