Product key on Student Office

Ellie

Is it possible to delete a product key from a computer that we no longer have access to, similar to deauthorizing itunes accounts? My daughter gave away her old ibook which must still have one of the registration keys. She now gets the message that she is already using Word and gets a forced quit. Other than buying a new copy of Office, is there anything we can do? Thanks.

The keys are only talking to other computers on your network. You can use
the same key on a new install. If you don't know which one, you might have
to use trial and error. Seems there is some tip that helps, but can't find
my notes on that right now. One of the other MVPs might know and chime in.

"Registration" has nothing to do with the operation of the software - unlike
the Activation required for MS Windows software.

Legally, when you gave away the computer you should have removed Office and
another third party software.

Yes, it is possible to remove a key from Microsoft Office, provided that you
still have access to it. It her case, that might present a challenge.

In future, she should remove software from the machine if she intends
continue to use it herself.

However, the duplicate key that is causing her problem is on the same local
network as herself. So somewhere in your house, there are two machines
running with the same product key.

You need to find them, and change the key on one of them. Or make sure that
one of them is shut down while she is using the other. If you tell us which
version of Office you are using, we can tell you exactly how to change the
licence key.

Cheers

Thanks to both John and Diane,

We have found the problem, it seems to be a conflict between my laptop and my daughter - same product ID in info window. (Therefore we must have deleted the app from the old computer). How do we know which product ID goes with which key and how do we delete and reinstall one of them? I see somewhere there is Remove Office, but I can't seem to find it on my computer. We are running Office:Mac Student/Teacher edition, There is no year listed anywhere.

Sorry, Ellie:

You still haven't told me which version of Office you are using, so I simply
can not answer. Each version is different.

Go you the Application menu in any application and choose the About item.

Cheers

OK, that's easy. On ONE of the computers, run the Remove Office Tool.

As SOON as you click it, hold down the Option key. It will ask you if you
want to remove the Licence Information. Say "Yes" then Quit it.

Next time you start an Office application, it will prompt for new CD Key.
Give it one (and put a check-mark against it, so you know which one you
used!).

If the problem comes back, you used the same key again. Repeat the
performance and use a different key. You have to be correct the second time
:)

Cheers

It says Microsoft Word X for Mac Service Release 1.

It seems like Remove Office Tool didn't begin until the 2004 version. I cannot find the additional tools folder, unless it is on the CDROM.

Although this version may be no longer supported, it works perfectly for us. We use Apple's own Mail program rather than Entourage. With the exception of this product ID issue, we've not ever had any problems.

Thanks.

"Remove Office" has been in every Office version released for OS X. Maybe
even before in Classic. I just don't remember. It should be on the CD.

Insert the Office X CD, then open the Value Pack. Launch the Value Pack
Installer. Check "Remove Office", then click "Continue." Run the "Remove
Office" utility. When done, re-install Office X from the CD.

Thanks Mickey,

That's exactly where it was. I never would have looked in the value pack. Removed and reinstalled with one of the other keys and did the last update.
