Why don't you have the key? Where did you purchase Office? If by download,
look in your e-mail for the key. Otherwise, download and install Belarc
Advisor to get all of your keys for Office and other programs.

i purcashed a laptop from a shop but it was the last one so they gave me the
one on the "sample" laptop they have on the shelf. microsoft office came
already installed but they didnt tell me the product key as it was already on
there, and thus therefore didnt see it as necessary. two years on and i had
to restore factory settings and now have no product key. currently
downloading berlac so will see where that gets me, thanks for your help

Since you restored to factory condition any of the key finders wont help
since they will only give the key for a working installation of Office.
And as Office is an oem edition even if you had the receipt MS cannot help
