My hard drive died and now I want to reinstall my Microsoft Office 2000
Professional. I can't find the 25 digit product key. How can I go about
finding this number??

Have you tried to take that Hard Drive and install it as a Slave in another computer and then try to pull off the key . Bad Hard Drives sometimes can be read as per above.

I tried and I wasn't able to do that. I still wouldn't be able too find the
product key by looking at the installed program would I?

What happened when you installed that Hard Drive as a Slave. You can get the installed keys that were used on installation of Office with the following

Belarc Advisor

If you have a legal copy of Office 2000, then see
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823570 "How to obtain a new product
key for Office program setup". Unlike earlier and later versions of
Office, Office 2000 does not store the installation product key in the
Windows registry, so keyfinder utilities such as Belarc Advisor and
Magical Jellybean Finder will be ineffective in this case.

That may be but on my W2K Advance Server with Office2000 Premium the key for Off2K shows up in the Registry.Belarc also brings it up on that machine.

Peter, it would not show anyhow on a hard drive that did not
have an installed program on it. If she put the bad drive
in the machine as a slave drive the programs and registry
files on that drive would basically be data to the OS and
installed programs on the main drive. Belarc will not find
the key on any SLAVE drive in this manner from either XP or
an Office program from a crashed drive.
