product key

Here's a good one. And it's the kind of ridiculous problem that gives
micrsoft that reputation it has with usability critics (think 'the
paperclip', or "press the start menu in order to shut down").

So, I've had office 2003 installed forever ... product key etc entered in.
But only after a year do I nopw want to use Outlook (instead of another email
client). So ... outlook boots. And then at one point Outlook suggests
that I download some security updates, which I do. After they install - it
asks me to re-enter my product key (why must I go search my file closet for
this disk!!) ... but thankfully it gives me the option to bypass. Great.
Now outlook runs.

I pack up and now am traveling. I check outlook. No problem.

I get to my destination and need to review some documents and spreadsheets
.... and what the f**k ... MS office asks me for product key ... or else I
cannot get into excel or word ... I am traveling. Thus screwed. Nice going
microsoft.

I legally own a program, had registered etc ... and was running fine, until
you wanted to patch a security problem. Now I cannot run the *other* parts
of the package.

geeze. I pray google gets into the desktop utilities fast.

thanks alot.

Hi ... thanks. the issue is not in getting the product key per say (I had
someone get into my office and look at the key and read it to me over the
phone).
The issue is how poorly MS designed that security update. My product was
legally installed on my system. I should not be forced to carry my orginal
disks with me wherever I go.

This has happened to me also and it is a flaw, if you run a disk clean up
also it will delete the download support files and then you also have to have
the install discs. A real problem if you are on the road.

I am having the same problem, and I agree, it is frustrating. In my case, I
am running Microsoft office on my mac. I purchased and installed Office 3
years ago, and have had no problems until the automatic update. Now I am
being asked for my product key, and although I have it, the program doesn't
accept it. My key is in the format *****-***-*******-*****, but the program
is making me enter digits in this format *****-*****-*****-*****. I have no
idea what to do, I can't even get rid of the updates when I try. Has anyone
had this problem with mac or pc?

Is the second set of digits OEM? If yes. then you need to apply to Apple or
the reseller from whom you purchased your computer for support
