Program Error "<process has already exited>..."

I get the following error message periodically when I use
Excel (also happens in Word):

Title Bar of Dialog Box: "Program Error"
Message: "<process has already exited> has generated
errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to
restart the program. An error log is being generated"

When this occurs, Excel closes automatically.

Also, I have problems with Excel and Word being
unresponsive if I open a document by double-clicking on
it. I'm not sure if they are related, but suspect they are.
