my word is inserting an arrow every time I hit the tab

Hi Mike,

The arrow is meant to represent the "nonprinting" tab character so you can
see where it is. It sounds like you're seeing only the tab characters, and
not little dots for spaces or the other nonprinting characters (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NonPrintChars.htm).

To turn it off, go to Tools > Options > View and uncheck the "Tab
characters" box near the middle of the dialog.

One of two things.
Check to see if the "Show/Hide" button is selected, if it is - deselect
it.
Also;
Tools->Options->View "Formatting Marks" uncheck the "Tab Characters"
box.
These two functions work hand-in-hand, i.e..;
If you de-select the Tab Characters the tabs won't show unless you
select the Show/Hide button.
If you have the Tab Characters selected in the Formatting Marks then the
Show/Hide will have no effect (the characters will always show up).
