Programming groups of resources

Franco Lombardo

I have a group of resources. Can I assign the group to a task, asking MS
Project to choose the less busy or the one that can complete the task
earlier?

Thanks in advance.

No. You can create a set of resources having a standard common skill
(programmers, builders etc) and show the total amount of that resource
that that group can contribute by setting the maximum availability of
the group sufficiently high.

You cannot ask project to choose an individual from that group and
optimise your plan.

Hi,

I rode the point.
I don't know if for you a group is like a team.
So to centralize the request about this point, i prefer to post here.
If it's not the good place, say me I post another request.

Context:
-Permit to use the self assign of task : ok by using the team pool and
assign at less one resource to the tasks.
-Permit to project manager to view availability by team1.

Issue:
Two resources are in the same Team Name : the Team1.
When I want to see the availability,
the capacity of each resources is going to 0 so how and is it possible to
define the calendar to associate to Team1.

If I don't associate the team to the two resources, the resource's calendar
is taken and the capacity is right.

In this link, I put pictures about the issue
http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dgq4sw2r_2055fzw34sc4

If you need more informations, don't hesitate.
I have two docs about using team in project but it's about the assignment
and the resource configuration, not the point described.

Hi Alex,

If you are grouping resources as Team1, then Team1 becomes a resource. You
can assign Team1 and create its calendar. But if you do, you cannot then
assign the individuals who make up Team1. It is either individual resources
or a Team of resources, you cannot mix the them.

This the correct forum for those Using the Standard version of Project. If
you are using a server, then try posting on the
microsoft.public.project.server newsgroup (forum). Please see FAQ Item: 24.

Hi,

Thanks,
But in that case, I dont see in ressource manager the resource Team1.
So I'm not sure its the right thinkgs, maybe I miss something.
Did you see my pictures on the google link?

Yes, but I don't recognize the outputs. Do they come from Project Pro with
Project Server? What version are you using and where did those outputs come
from?

Just create a new resource called Team1 and give it Max Units of 2.

Hi Mike,

They come from Project Server.
Click on resource center -> choose the resource and edit.
In the bottom of the webpage, you have a field permitted to select the team.

So I understand your point you ask me to add a Team 1 and add a Max units of
2.
But it's not what I want or maybe I don't understand the limitation of the
team pool.

If I create a resource named Team1.
I can't associate my resources to this one.
Because Team1 is a resource and not a team.
But in Project server I saw the notion of Pool Team.
So i try to use it as you can see in my pictures from the website notified
above.
And i see that.

I'm sorry, but I didn't understand. In Project Server you can define a
resource Pool? What is the meaning of this notion? Could it solve my
problem? (I know that this is not the correct group for this question, but
the thread started here, so I think we could continue for a while.... :)

(To Alex: what do you mean exactly with "self assign of task"?)

Thanks a lot.

Hi,

I don't think it's a resource pool.
It's like a custom field.
But I don't think I can use it really because I cant manage the capacity of
this team, and in view availability, I don't see an icon or something
indicates the capacity of the team, so to my side(with my limit knoledge of
pool team) it's useless.

Self assign of task means a resource can self assign to a task if the
resource is from the same team which the resource already assigned.
