programs opewning on their own

I hope someone can help me here before i have to reinstall winxp.i can be
working on any file and all of a sudden the start menu opens and various
programs start opening. sometimes i can hit escape and i will be able to
close the programs and resume what i was doing, other times it will shut the
program i was working on down. I have restored it back to all available
times to no avail.
