Programs stay loaded in memory--can't start programs

All office standard programs are staying loaded in memory and will not close
out on their own. When restarting programs later, must go in to task manager
and end the process that is still loaded. Not sure why this is happening,
but happened after installation of Office 2007 Standard and SP3 for Windows
XP.
