Proj 2007 - "save as 2000-2003" needs converter for older Proj ins

I'm on an evaluation team for Proj 2007. I set up my prefs to save files in
Proj 2000-2003 format. Several others in the org running older versions of
Proj and attempting to open my proj file get a prompt about the file being
created in a newer version, and would they like to download a "converter",
'yes' taking them to the MS download site and 'no' terminating the open.

We aren't ready to move everyone to Proj 2007, so short of retrieving and
installing the converter on workstations with the older product or
distributing paper, is there any other solution that will still allow me to
share my files electronically?

Thanks in advance.

Hello vabki,

The users of Project 2003 also need to be running Service Pack 3 in
order to be able to open Project 2007 files, I believe.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

What about users who are running an even older version, like 2000? Is there
a service pack for them, too?

I don't believe so, vabki. I don't have 2000 here to test, so I'm
afraid I can't address 2000 opening Project 2007 files at all.

Perhaps someone with Project 2000 will weigh in with some
experiences.

As far as I'm aware, Project 2000 does not support 2007 file format,
probably because 2000 is no longer supported?

Hi vabki,

Project 2000 cannot open a Project 2007 created file, and there is no SP or
converter available. However, you can open it in 2007 and then save it as
2003. Then you can open that in 2000. I've just tried it OK, but you will
lose and data that is specific to 2007 that was not invented for 2000,
though the basic data is preserved. Much better to upgrade everyone to 2007

Mike, thanks for the info. I re-saved my file and it looks like things are
fine now. Maybe there was "operator error", but read on as I explain why I
doubt that happened.

I don't have a "format" option for Project 2003 - my option, which I set as
my default in Tools - Save, is "Project 2000 - 2003". Therefore, any time I
"save" or "save as", the format should be backwards-compatible.
