Project 2003 - Import from Excel

I am finding the import process from excel to project up
to 100 times slower than it was on project 98. Is there
a reason for this at all? Is there an option that I need
to take off to speed up the import? I have tried the
same excel file and project on a collegues machine so I
know it is neither the import file or the project itself.
