Project 2003 SP2. Operation failed saving as HTML

When trying to save a Project as a web page using the export wizard, it gets
down to the point where it will try to create the HTML page and then we get a
Operation Failed. Any ideas on what to try?

Thanks.

Very odd indeed. Last week I was able to do it and this week I am fainling
with the exact same error. In fact, I've tried a number of things,
(different name, different target folder, different extensions) I can't save
in any format other than mpp.
I'm now also looking for assistance on what to try next.

Hello Rwturen01,

Have you installed SP-3 for Project 2003? With SP-3 installed, I have
no trouble saving as HTML. It's possible that a recent security
update has changed your ability to save as HTML.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Yes. Just yesterday my machine was upgraded with SP3 and all is well now.
Thanks to all for pointing me in that direction. BTW - As a result, SP3 is
going to be pusehd out to all of the machines MSP is installed on.

All set. Yesterday SP3 was installed and all is well. As a result, all of
the machines with MSP here will be pushed the SP3 update.

Julie, As noted in below below/above(?) posting , SP3 did the trick. Thanks
for the help in pointing me in the right direction.

Hi,
We are still having this problem. We are all on 2003 SP2, but it's working
OK on my machine but not for some of my colleagues. Anything else we could
check for?

Hi Sandie,

The problem seems to be related to a security update which was
installed and is referenced by KB948962. I have not personally had
the issue because I had Project Service Pack 3 installed before the
security update was applied. Several people have noted that
installing Service Pack 3 seems to have resolved the problem. If you
cannot install SP-3 see the following KB article for a registry fix
that may help.

Thanks for your speedy response, Julie. I just heard about that patch a few
minutes ago but appreciate your lead on the registry fix. We're about to
convert to 2007 soon, so I'm not sure if we'll be able to get SP3 at my
workplace.

You're welcome Sandie. If you do install Project 2007, I strongly
suggest installing SP-1 and the Infrastructure update to Project 2007.
The service pack for 2003 doesn't cost anything and if you need to
export information to HTML I suggest installing. Also, just an FYI,
Project 2007 does not have the capability of saving as HTML built in.

Interesting about Project 2007. Do you know how 2007 users export to Excel
and keep the outline structure?

Hi Sandie,

Like Project 2003, there is no automated way of handling this. Many
users run a VBA procedure to export the data and then apply the
formatting in Excel. Others export the outline level field and use
that to format once in Excel.

Fellow MVP, Jack Dahlgren has generously posted some VBA code to
handle the export and formatting. See Jack's "Export hierarchy to
Excel" macro at:

http://masamiki.com/project/macros.htm

I hope this helps.

Definitely. I have assiduously avoided using VBA because I'm not a programmer
and I guess I've been kind of lazy, but it looks like I need to get on the
stick so I can be of better service to my organization. I assume I don't
necessarily have to learn VBA to run routines that some other smart person
cooks up, right?

Thanks so much for your advice.

No, that's the beauty of what Jack has so helpfully provided. On his
page he gives directions on how to install and so on. Do be aware
however, that the default security setting in Project 2007 and 2003
prevents the running of unsigned macros. You'll need to drop your
macro security settings to either medium or low. (Tools > Options,
Security tab.)

If you ever feel a desire to expand your knowledge of using VBA in
project, I highly recommend Rod Gil's book on Project VBA. You don't
have to be a programmer to understand Rod's book and you can really
extend the power of the program with some bits of code. You can find
info on Rod's book at:

You're most welcome for the assistance as well. Glad to have helped
and thanks for the feedback.
