Project 2003 vs. 2007 - Can I still train them on 2003?

Alex Zimmerhaven

Hi everybody. Hope you are all having a good day. Quick question - I have a
group of users that currently have Project 2007 installed (they just got it
installed). Unfortunately, my lab and curriculum is for 2003. Now, they are
just going to be using the most basic elements of project - nothing too, too
fancy. Working with tasks, creating resources, printing stuff, views, that's
it. They don't have project server or anything of that question. I'm only
going to be training them for 3 hours.

So, the big question is this - Can I just go ahead and train them on my
Project 2003 machines? Or should they wait until I upgrade to 2007.

Thanks again to all of you out there that post such valuable information!

Thanks,
Alex

On the desktop there are not many significant differences in the basic
functions or UI.
Probably you can train the basics on either one.
Added for 2007 are the task driver function, change highlighting, multiple
level undo.
If they are going to be using project I'd train them on 2003 and you can
cover the 2007 bits with a very simple document.

Alex,

In addition to Jack's great answer, the only other significant
difference for the skill level you describe, is the change in the
Change Working time dialog box and the variances on changing
calendars.

Julie,

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your response. This was extremely
helpful. I have to train this on Monday, so now I'm all set. I really
appreciate it.

You're most welcome Alex. Good luck with the class on Monday -- I'm
sure you and your users will adapt just fine.

Hi Alex,

Jack and Julie told the most important things, however, if you go through
resources keep in mind that Project 2007 has inlcuded a new type of resource
(apart from material and work) which is the cost type resource. This is a
noticable difference especially for those who work with subcontractors.

Hi Alex,

Also, you might like to suggest they have a look at my series on Microsoft
Project in the TechTrax ezine at this site: http://tinyurl.com/2xbhc or

(Perhaps they'd care to rate the articles before leaving the site, :)
Thanks.)

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)
