Project 2007 breaks MOSS

Environment Project server 2007 + AD etc
Clients have Office 2003 Professional on XPSP2.
*before* installing project professional 2007 they can 'edit in
datasheet' any sharepoint list.
*after* the install of project professional 2007 attempting to edit a
sharepoint list with 'edit in datasheet' results in:

"The list cannot be displayed in Datasheet view for one or more of
the
following reasons: A datasheet component compatible with Windows
SharePoint
Services is not installed, your browser does not support ActiveX
controls, or
support for ActiveX controls is disabled."

This is a big problem for us.
Doing a repair on Office 2003 causes IE to crash with a general
exception when it opens any list! Doing a repair on PP2007 after that
stops IE crashing - but breaks the edit in datasheet functionality. So
there is obviously some serious imcompability between the bits that
are installed by O2003 and PP2007.

We have spent a week so far investigating registry entries and dlls
without finding a solution.

Has anyone got a working exmaple of how to get PP2007 on the same
workstation as Office2003 *without* breaking EID?

Try this therapy and see if it works:

1. Do a search for owssupp.dll. Rename all copies.
2. Go to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs
3. Select Office and do a repair.

If this works, you'll need to do this from time to time, or migrate your
content to WSS 3.0. I think the problems stem from having mixed versions of
Office on the same workstation, so another option is to upgrade Office for
the folks running Project 2007 and Server. It will be a better experience
for them if you do.

Thanks for the reply but I should clarify that the data IS in WSS 3.0.
Ie the sharepoint sites we are trying to connect to are running WSS3.0
They work fine with Of2k3 except for the edit in datasheet.
Are you saying that it is the owssupp.dll that provides this
functionality?
What registry entry tell the system where to find the dll?
Could I bodge the registry to tell it to use a different version of
the DLL?
Both the o2k3 and o2k7 versions are on my system so presumably I could
use either?

When I repair o2k3 the browsing to ANY sharepoint list causes IE to
fault and die. I am assuming that one of the critical dlls in o2k3
gets backdated to a version that bombs out once you 'repair' to the
initial install?

Unfortutely installing o2k7 aint gonna happen in the near future - in
fact I think its more likely that project serer would be dropped if
that were the only option :(

What I'm saying is that I've seen this dll become corrupt in mixed Office
environments. I'm not saying that this is your problem, I'm saying only that
it **might be.*** No harm can come from the procedure I suggested: Do a
simple search on your hard drive, make sure your folder settings don't hide
the files. Rename the dll and the system will reinstall it during the
repair. If this solves your problem, you at least have a workaround until we
see what the service pack brings us.

Ok, this has taken weeks and no-one from Microsoft has come up with a
fix, but we think we have found one:

We have identified that the installation of *any* Office 2007
component onto an Office 2003 installation causes the 'edit in
datasheet' functionality of Sharepoint lists to stop working. This
means that the installation of Project 2007 will cause this
functionality to fail on users machines. It is reported as an ActiveX
error but this is incorrect. There are multiple posts on the Internet
regarding this problem but do date, no fix.

This morning we have clarified that this problem can be avoided by the
following actions after installing Project2007.

a) Start an install of Office2007 Professional
b) Choose CUSTOMIZED install and DESELECT EVERYTHING. (ie make sure
EVERY icon has a red cross in it)

c) NOW Open Office tools in the Office 2007 Professional setup
programme and choose 'Microsoft Office Access Web DataSheet Component'
as 'run from my computer'. ie ONLY select this component for
installation

d) Press continue and complete the install.

After this has completed the 'Edit in datasheet' will work. We suspect
that despite the single Project Pro 2007 application indicating it is
installing the 'Microsoft Office Access Web DataSheet Component', it
isnt doing it properly. Either it fails to install a component or
fails to register it correctly in the registry. This is fixed by the
install process built into Office 2007 Professional.

Thanks for the support trail.
We have the same issue however solved it another way because we are not
using any office 2007 products besides MSP2K7
In control Panel, under add remove prgrams, find MSProject 2007 and click on
change, click on ad remove features.
Deselect the office shared features at the top level and continue. Make
sure your browswer window is shut down.

I am answering my own post.
The issue with my solution is that I am missing a component to adjust
security. I get an error on page when I try to edit security or add a person
to a project. If I reload MSP2K7 with the shared features installed, the
edit in security and team build start working but the data sheet breaks.

Scubaal,

Did you see my post below? We solved by reloading MSP2K7 w/out the shared
features. This broke the ability for PM's to build a team and for admins to
edit security. We get an error on page in the lower left corner. If we
reload MSP2K7 with the shared features, editing security and teams work
however, the data sheet is broke again. Any suggestions??
