Project 2007 crashed soon after start up

D

Doug_F

A user has been running Project 2007 for a few weeks. No big problems.
A couple of days ago, he starts Project and after a couple of minutes
(doesn't matter if he does anything or not), Project crashes and he gets this
most polite dialog box:
"Microsoft Project has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience".

Google returns one and only one hit on this error:
http://www.mcse.ms/archive/index.php/t-1486880.html
Not terribly helpful.

At this point, I have no other information. Does anybody either know what
the likely cause is or need specific information I can go get to help
diagnose the problem?

If I can get other data, I'll post as a reply.

TIA

Doug

Hi Doug,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

I don't have an answer :( If you can open Project long enough to try
Help/Microsoft Office Diagnostics you could try that. If not, try
re-installing Project - I think it gives the option to repair your
installation, if not, re-install. If that fails, then I suggest you contact
Microsoft support.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Mike,

I have a bit more data now.

The user has done an uninstall and re-install.
He also had both 2003 and 2007 installed so they pulled 2003 to see if that
fixed anything (not).
The only other thing that was done to the user's system was to remove .Net
1.0 and add .Net 2.0. The user is says that the 'insta-crash' mode started
happening around the .Net update event. No way to know for sure if they're
really connected or just connected in the user's mind.

I'll give the diagnostics thing a try.

I'm going to add a different post on a different diagnostic thought process.

Doug

ps - thanks for the welcome. I'm brand new to Project and it looks like
I'll be tasked to admin the Project/IIS/SQL/SharePoint server - I've been
over on the Server group for a few weeks getting educated. This specific
problem is (or appears to be) tied just to client, not PWA or the server
component.

Hi Doug

Is user connecting to Project Server using Project Pro 2007?

if so, delete his local global.mpt file (C:\Documents and Settings
\<user name>\Application Data\Microsoft\MS Project\12\1033) and cache
folder (C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data
\Microsoft\MS Project\Cache).

Thanks
Krishna

Krishna,

He's tried working both on and off-line and crashed both ways. I'll have
him kill off these files and see what happens.

Thanks.

Mike,

Thanks for the suggestion.

<ramble only partially linked to the problem>
These two programs are so tightly linked it's sometimes hard for me to
decide where to post (and I hate double posting when it's not appropriate).
Since it seemed to be the client failing when disconnected from the server, I
felt the best fit was here.

FWIW, our network guys deleted 'all of the files' (no clue what that means)
and did a re-install for the user. I have not heard anything new since then
so I don't know if the problem has gone away or if he hasn't cranked up
Project or if it's still crashing and he just hasn't bothered to let me
know...

If he's fixed, we're done.
If he's still crashing, I'll post over on the server forum.

Thanks again for the reply

The unistall/delete all files thing worked. Something was corrupt in his
initial install and killing off all of the remnants of the initial install
seems to have fixed the problem.

Thanks again.
