Project 2007: Linking related tasks in separate projects?

A

Annukka

In the MSP_EPMTask table in the Reporting database, there is a column
TaskParentUID linking each task to its parent task. Similarly, I would like
to link a task to one or more ‘sibling’ tasks in separate projects. I would
use this link when making reports out of the data in the Reporting database,
but the project managers should be able establish these links using Project
Professional.
Is there a way to do this? Just some way to link two tasks in different
projects, without any side-effects but just denoting them to be related.

Hello Annukka,

Open the project files you wish to link. Choose Window > New Window
and select all files. When you click OK, you will create a project
file containing all tasks from all projects. You can then select
the predecessor, scroll to select the successor and link as normal
using the Link Tasks button on the Standard toolbar.

This will create a relationship between the selected tasks across
the different project files. No need to save the consolidated file,
just save the individual project files to maintain the external
predecessor/successor links.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

If I understand correctly, this will create predecessor/successor
relationships between tasks, so that the schedule of one task will affect the
schedule of the other one. I don't want this to happen. I just want to be
able to relate the two tasks when making reports, so that I can present some
information on a specific tasks and another task that is marked to be somehow
related to it, without defining the nature of the relationship.

Hello Annukka,

You're correct, the method I outlined will create
predecessor/successor relationships. Other than creating those
relationship, there is no direct method to "relate" tasks to one
another. I imagine you could use flag fields to mark the tasks, but
it would be manual. You can certainly create the consolidated
project and then through filtering or sorting report about similar
tasks that you mark as "related".

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
