Project 2007 ... Professional vs Standard

Maurice

Greetings:

I cannot find a direct comparison between these version's features on the
Microsoft Office website. Guidance sought

Hello Maurice,

The short answer is that Project 2007 Professional is designed to
work with Project 2007 Server, part of the Enterprise Project
Management offering from Microsoft. If you do not intend to install
Project Server for the enterprise capabilities and need to create
and manage projects without Project Server, Project Standard will
suit the bill quite nicely and is less expensive.

For an overview of the EPM offering see:

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Much thanks for your timely reply. I actually found a microsoft site that
compares the two. Additionally, my school is offering a several hundred
dollar discount for the professional version and the standard for $60. If
successful I probably will need to move up to an edtion that pairs with
either my own server server or anothers. The comparison chart 'checks' the
features but does not specifically state that any functionality is lost by
using the pro version as a desktop app. If you have any knowledge of this
your informed opinion would be welcome.

Thank you

Hello Maurice,

Just to clarify, Project Standard will allow you to store Project
files on a file server without difficulty. Project Professional
works with **Project Server** which is a fairly complex (and
expensive) product which works with SQL Server, WSS and other server
based software. If you are a student, I would certainly purchase
the $60.00 version of Project Standard.

If you find a job where Project Server is used and the company
requires you to use Project Professional, they will undoubtedly
supply you with the software as well as any additional training
required to bring you up to speed on the company specific
implementation of Project Server.

There is no functionality lost when using Project Standard and
Project Professional without a Project Server installed. Buy
Project Standard and save your money for the important stuff :)

Good luck Maurice and do drop by again should you have further
questions.

Julie
