Project 2007 Upgrade

My boss wants to "upgrade" his new laptop with Project 2007. His old laptop
has Project 2003. I'm wondering what is the installation process for a
purchased "upgrade package". Does the previous version have to be installed
to upgrade, or do I just need to have the previous version's serial number
available. What is the difference between an upgrade package and a new
purchase package? Any help would be appreciated.

The upgrade process is one of two methods.
If the P2003 is installed on the target machine, just insert the P2007 media
into the drive and no problem.

Since you have a two separate machines involved, the second method only
requires access to the original media (the P2003 CD, or a network install
location). From there the P2007 install will install a full version of
P2007... this is probably the best method since it is a clean full install.
You will insert the P2003 disk into the CD drive when requested by the P2007
installation process.

If you do not have the media, there may be a work around. Copy the
WINPROJ.EXE file (location is probably: C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\OFFICE11\) to the same location on the new machine. Try running your
P2007 setup.

Of course, the rules of the game require you to uninstall the P2003 from the
old machine after you successfully install the upgrade on the new machine
unless a full license was purchased. The problem is once you unistall P2003
from the old machine you are absolutely "done" with P2003 unless you have the
install media.

Thanks Jim - and now I learn the only disk he has is 1998 version. Is it
possible to "upgrade" from this...? And yes, I understand the need to
uninstall from the old laptop which going to get reformatted etc.

Sorry, that version won't work, see here:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/suites/FX101754511033.aspx#2
(assumes you are in United States of America)

Microsoft does not have an "Enter Serial Key" feature from old product.
Adobe has that feature and it has saved me a couple of times with Flash and
Photoshop reinstalls.

Another option would be to Ghost his entire image from old laptop to new and
work it that way. I think Norton Ghost runs about $65 at your local big box
Office Supply store ...

All in all, you may have a faster (and therefore less manhours) solution to
bite the bullet and buy the full product license. If you can avoid a couple
hours of your time with a real license, you;d be better off doing that.
That way you are freed up to do other work.
