project 98 & 2000 on one machine

i've got both project 98 & 2000 on one machine and up until now i haven't
had a problem ... however, i created a project file on a project 2000
machine at work, brought it home and now when i make changes and try and
save it in project 2000 i get a message about the format being incompatible
with project 98 and if i save it as project 98 i might lose some data and to
click no - and save it in the latest format.

if i choose no and check "save as type" - microsoft project 98 is not
chosed - just project.mpp ... if i say "yes" and basically ignore the
message it saves it in 98 format.

Help i need to make changes for 1st thing tomorrow morning and i can't
afford to lose the 2000 specific elements (namely, task calendars).

i've tried messing around with the file associations - but this doesn't seem
to make a difference - can anyone assist ?

Cheers

Hi Julie,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Different versions of Project don't sit happily on one machine - the main
problem being that there should be only one global.mpt. It sounds as if the
mpp association is with the 98 global.mpt. I would recommend uninstalling
98. On the other hand, you could first try reinstalling 2000. If all
fails, try searching for all instances of global.mpt and deleting them, or
at least changing their names if you want to save customisations. Running
2000 will then recreate a default global.mpt into which, using Organizer,
you can copy back the customizations. Good luck!

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :))

Hi Mike

couldn't uninstall 98 as i can't locate my CD - buried somewhere in boxes as
its pre-office move :(

in the end, i went to the other partition of my HDD and used 2003

i will, however, when i've got a bit more time do as you suggested and see
if it solves the problem.

Thanks for your response.

Cheers
