project 98 converter

Dick

I have project 2007 but have several projects stored in Project 98 and need a
converter in order to used the contents of the projects for information
purposes. Can't find a 98 converter on MS website.

Hi Dick,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

You will need a copy of Project 2000, 2002 or 2003. You might be able to
get one on eBay. Open in one of those versions and Save it. This should
then be openable in Project 2007.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

So are you saying you can't open 98 files in 2007? The 2007 info page
explicitly says that you can:
"Microsoft Project 98 file The standard file format for a project, which
uses the .mpp extension. Microsoft Office Project 2007 supports opening from
the Microsoft Project 98 file format."

What gives? I have many 98 files and just downloaded a trial 2007. When I
try to open a 98 file in 2007, 2007 crashes.

Hi Scott,

The poster asked for a converter and I was responding with that in mind as
there is no converter. I must admit I was wrong and must have been thinking
of pre-98 versions :( I'm, pleased to have this opportunity to correct my
mistake

You can open Project 98 files in Project 2007, but you have to change the
security settings under Tools/Options and accept the possibility of harmful
macros getting through. However, if you know and trust the origin of the 98
files, you should be able to open them in Project 2007. Why 2007 crashes I
don't know. Have you tried changing the security setting?

I did change the security settings under the "legacy" files to allow opening
of 98 files.
It still crashes.
The 98 files have a custom defined view. Could that be an issue?

I really don't know, Scott :( I suspect it's more a function of the Trial version. Does it happen with other 98 projects? Try opening a new project and then Inserting a 98 project.
