Project: Can I link only the top-line task, w/o showing subtasks

I have a masterz project, really a project list, and each "task" is the
collapsed first line of ongoing active projects. I want to show only the
first line of each working project on the master list, and not all the
underlying detail...can I lock the task so it cannot be expanded for
management view, but still provide updating when the working projects are
updated? I just want to show management the duration of the project only,
not sub-tasks...

nosrednag,
I'm a little confused. Your subject line talks about links on what is a
summary line (i.e. "top-line" task) but your actual post says nothing
about that. If you are thinking of linking summary lines (whether in a
master file or an individual file) you should take a look at FAQ 48 -
Summary line linking, found on our MVP website at:
http://www.mvps.org/project/faqs.htm

To answer your question, there is no way to "lock" select data in
Project so other users cannot see it. The only way to keep someone from
seeing the data is to provide the file in hardcopy or in a non-Project
form (e.g. HTML, PDF, etc.). However, why not simply save the master in
the collapsed format and distribute that. If some manager wants to see
the detail, he will be able to, but at least the default format is the
"short form".

There are ways to get there if you just can't live without a short form
top level plan. One way is to create a special management only file that
consists of the information contained at the summary level. This can be
generated manually or it could be created using a static master and then
purging all subtasks. But before you go to all that trouble remember
that people (even managers) are trainable.
