Project check-in issue

Annukka

Hi,

With Project 2007, I have a problem checking in a specific project. Each
time I open it in Project Professional, the program says that it is checked
out and can only be opened as read-only. I have to open it as read-only,
close it, re-open it - and then it works fine. But it's very frustrating to
do this every time I open the project.

My colleague has the same problem with another project, but all the other
projects are working ok. We do close and check in the project before closing
Project Professional, and there is no job blocking the queue. My colleague
was also worried about the task updates that are accepted when opening the
project as read-only. As you can not save them, are they lost or do the
appear in the project plan when the project is re-opened?

I have noticed that this is a common problem, and maybe it has been fixed
already. If so, I would really like to know which hotfix it is.

Regards,
Annukka

There is no silver bullet with this issue however we have noticed:

1. Clearing your local project cache via Project Pro client does not always
remove the cached copy. You will need to browse to the local cache on the
machine that is having the problem and delete all the contents of that folder
manually.

2. Having blank tasks in the timeline can cause problems - make sure you
have them remove all blank tasks and then publish and see if the issue is
resolved.

I strongly suggest that you install SP2 and the April CU. To clear this
issue you need to delete the project cache.

In the run dialog, type %appdata%/microsoft/ms project/

Delete the files contained in that directory.

Thanks for this Gary; a clarification please.

I find 2 sub-directories here; namely <12> and <cache>. Wont touch <12> as
it seems to contain my copy of Enterprise Templates but can I delete the
<cache> subdirectory as it seems to contain cahe stuff.

Cheers, Andrew

Deleting the cache does not help. Every user has the same problem with this
project and this specific computer - and each user has his/her own cache on
that computer, correct? The program crashes even the first time you open the
project with that computer, when there is nothing in the cache.

Sorry, I mixed this with my other problem: Project Professional crashes each
time I open a specific project with a specific computer. It was one of these
project which did not open correctly, and now it does not open at all -
except on any other computer. Cleaning the cache does not fix any of these
problems. Neither does re-installing Project Professional.

Would it cause any issues if he deploys only April CU on the client but not
SP2 on the server? Just asking in case.. in our environment it takes a lot
(.. lot) of time to get everyone ready for SP deployment, whilst a single
client can be patched almsot straight away.. Would it be a good idea just to
patch the client first and see if that makes the issue go away?

Vaso:

I'm not sure that the scenario is wise or supported and I doubt this
scenario has been tested as it's so unlikely. The service pack has a year of
fixes included in it, while the CU has only fixes that were baked for two
months after the SP.Which is more likely to add value? I don't believe that
there are any local cache fixes in the April CU as there are non specified
in the documentation, however there are certainly fixes for this in SP2.
