Project Checkout

Is there a reference anyone can provide for where the process of
project checkout is documented? I can read on MSDN about making calls
to the PDS for checkout, and I can find a little bit that describes
what the PDS is, but I'm curious as to whether the checkout is actually
a database function that PDS is front-ending, or something done by the
Project Server application or Session Management by maintaining tables
and enforcing access in the application portion.
