Project client hangs when connecting to server

The Project Pro client always hangs when it tries to connect to a defined
project server account, but easily connects after cancelling and then
reconnecting. Has anyone seen this behavior? Does anyone have a solution?

I think this is the only cause of this behavior that we've cataloged. Out of
curiosity, do you know of any others?

Hi,
I encountered this problem too. But we do not have McAfee in use.
Because it can easily be solved by pressing Cancel and the reconnect again,
and it happens in about 5% of the MSP startups, this is not a real problem
;-)

Some people consider this behavior unacceptable. In your case, something
else is the cause.

No, I have never seen anything else cause this. I have heard that extremely
high latency could be a cause, but have never seen it happen.

hello all,
I am experiencing the same behaviour when connecting Project Professional to
Project Server, i.e. it hangs when trying to connect on the first try,
cancelling and re-trying takes you right in.
the server is a P4 machine with a 3.2 Ghz processor and 1GB RAM. On it are
deployed Windows 2003 Server, SQL Server 2000, SharePoint Portal Server 2003
and Microsoft Virtual Server 2005. Project Server 2003 is set up on the
Virtual Server with OS being Windows 2003 Server.
Connectivity is just fine and PWA runs great. The only issue is the
re-connecting of the Project Professional to the Project Server everytime.
Any help ?

I hope this doesn't confuse the issue but I've found on two different
customer sites that it's intermittent. Occasionally Project Pro will connect
first time.
I don't know if some sort of timing glitch is enabling the connection to
sneak past McAfee. If so, McAfee should be concerned about that too.

I'm starting to have the same issue with ms-project.

However, I installed McAfee entreprise edition 8i around the same time this
problem happened.

Other co-worker don't have this problem and don't have McAfee installed

I remove-it and the situation is now fixed.

From what I read on this post, some people don't have this bug and some
other yes. This problem with McAfee could be related to some specific version.

I'm curious to known what is the McAfee version people here are using and
may be put the finger on this issue helping the ms-project community.

Actually there was a hotfix for this that came out after Service Pack 1 came
out. You can refer to kb899341 that says that this fix was supposed to be
included in Service Pack2.

Description of the Project 2003 post-Service Pack 2 hotfix package:
February 28, 2006
(899341) - File name File version File size Date Time
Office2003-kb899341-glb.exe ...
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/899341/en-us

In the section that says List of Issues Fixed you will see "When you try to
connect to Project Server 2003 by using Project Professional 2003, the logon
page is blank." I heard this hotfix never actually made it into service pack
2. I had applied it after Service Pack 1 came out and it resolved the issue.
As soon as I installed SP2 it started happening again, and trying to reload
the old hotfix "Project 2003-KB899341-Fullfile" no longer works after SP2 is
applied. Anyway its a known bug.
