Project crashes when opening linked server files - advice?

Bill Project User

Hello,

I have three linked files on Project Server 2003 accessed with Project
Professional 2003 SP2. When I attempt to open the files, Project goes into a
"Not Responding" state and displays the vague message:

"Microsoft Project has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience."

It gives me the option of restarting project, debug, send error report /
don't send. The debug info includes: "An exception 'Unhandled Win32
Exception' has occurred in WINPROJ.EXE" and "Faulting application
winproj.exe, version 11.2.2005.1801, stamp 42ee6fe4, faulting module
winproj.exe, version 11.2.2005.1801, stamp 42ee6fe4, debug? 0, fault address
0x00637bb6."

Here are the steps I go through to get to this point:

1. Start Project app
2. Enter password for Project Server and select "Disable Macros"
3. Select Project file from list on Server
4. Project displays the progress bar in the lower left: "Opening
'ProjectName.Published'..."
5. The intended file is then displayed while the progress bar indicates
Project is attempting to open the linked Project files too: "Opening
'ProjectLinkedName.Published'..."
6. When the progress bars complete, the error message (outlined above) is
displayed.

I think the corruption exists in the links between the files but I have no
chance of editing the files as Project crashes before any action can be
taken. Can I open files individually by forcing Project to not open instances
of the linked files automatically?

I have also tried opening the files from the web interface but that has
similar results. One other note: after Project crashes, the server indicates
I still have the file locked and in use so I am forced to "check-in" the file
using the Admin web interface.

Any help is greatly appreciated!
-Bill
