Project database not created on MSDE2000A

I am running Access 2000 on a Windows 2000 machine. A peer computer
runs MSDE 2000A, also under Win2K. At the moment I am running under
the Administrator account on the client (with the Access 2000)

On trying to create a "project", the MSDE instance is found, but the
result in MS Access is the database window, with no entries in the
Tables section. Is this normal??
When trying to create the database, after the wizard says it has the
info it needs, it closes and a progress bar appears as it tries to
create the database, but thsi progress bar is displayed for only a
split second. This is a clear indication that no database was created.

On trying Insert>Table, I get an error message "Table1 cannot be open
due to a dropped connection".

On using File>Connection:
1) I find the instance name blank, but I can select the MSDE instance
that I want.
2) I choose Win NT Authentication and
3) For the "Select a ddatabase on the server", I can only pick the
standard databases of the MSDE (master, model, msdb, tempdb). The name
of the database I am trying to create is not shown and doesn't exist
onthe server.
4) If I choose one of the databases listed in (3) above, I get the
"Create Table in Design View" option in the Tables section of the
database window.

Dropping the firewall on both machines doesn't solve the problem.

I am new to MS Access projects, but not to regular MS Access
databases, in which I get several wizards to create tables, forms ,
etc.

Why isn't a database created on the MSDE??
