Project Gallery and Word publishing layout

Why is it, that when I am in Word publishing layout, every time I open a new template from the Elements Gallery Word opens a new document? I simply want to preview several different templates say for a brochure but I end up with about 6 open documents. And I even like the Elements tool bar above the document.
But is there anyway to prevent this from happening? It's annoying. I am new to this version of Word. Is it something I am not doing correctly?

If you don't want to create the new document don't click the Open button in
the Project Gallery - use the preview window within the Gallery to determine
which one you want to use. There are 3 buttons above the list which enable
previewing the templates in different ways. The Open button (or
double-clicking one of the preview thumbnails) is for opening a new document
based on the selected template.

Likewise, the buttons in the Elements Gallery are for exploring the
available elements & viewing them in the Gallery's bar - don't click one of
the thumbnails if you don't want to use that element.

It sounds like you're looking for a single, full-window preview whose
content changes based on your choices, but there is no such feature. If you
so create the new document & don't like what you see just close it before
opening another.

I've discovered by right-clicking a gallery image it will appear as a new document. HOWEVER, if you right-click another image, the earlier image is closed and only the newest image appears. You only end up with ONE gallery image, and not a dozen or so "previews" that end up as separate documents.
