Project Gallery

I asked this question on the Excel newsgroup a week ago, with no response:

In Excel 2004, a file I use on a daily basis doesn't show up under the
"Recent" tab in Project Gallery. I've tried narrowing down the choices to
Excel files only (default is All Office Documents) and played with the
"Today", "Yesterday", "This Week" options, all to no avail.

The file was originally an MS Works timesheet template that I converted to
Excel 97 on a PC back in 1998, and now use daily on a TiBook running OS X
10.3.8.

It does show up in my recent file list under Excel's "File" menu, just not
in Project Gallery.

I've searched as much of the newsgroup as I've been allowed to download, and
haven't seen this addressed. Any thoughts?

I suspect the reason you haven't had an answer is that nobody else has
seen this.

Is it only the one file? Others get on the list OK?

Is the file local or on a server?

Have you tried repairing permissions using the DiskUtility app in the
Applications/Utilities folder?

As a guess, try, with all Office apps closed, deleting the

~:Library:preferences:Microsoft:com.microsoft.Office.prefs.plist

file (where ~ is your home directory).

I've seen this a lot. Also, a file that has been opened recently (like today
or yesterday) remains in the last week pane in the project gallery.
Permissions are not the issue. However, I never bothered to search out the
real reason or situations when it occurs, but I've reported it several
times. I simply use Excel's list or use file-open, and anxiously wait for a
fix in an update.

I don't use the feature all that much, but I've never seen anything like
that. Do you leave XL open all the time? Word used to have a problem
where it read the date on startup, then used that date for updating
fields, even if it was three days later, as long as you hadn't closed
and reopened it.

The recent file list is stored in
~:Library:preferences:Microsoft:com.microsoft.Office.prefs.plist

Perhaps trashing that (with all Office apps close) would help?

I use my Work Menu add-in, but I haven't done anything with it for
months, so I haven't posted it to my website. It adds a menu like Word's
Work menu, with a few bells and whistles. I should probably dig it out
and release it.

Try changing your MACOS X System Preferences under Appearance. Change
the recent files from 10 (default) to something like 20 or 30. Don't
know why they hid under Appearance, but that did the trick for me.
