Project Intake Process

K

Kyle

Good morning.
We are in the process of implementing Project Server 2007 (Portoflio Server
is already live in our environment). We are struggling with how we input
projects, obtain approval, and then deliver. If we continue to use Portfolio
for this activity, it eliminates our ability to use Project Templates.

How do others perform the intak process?

Thanks.

Kyle,

What you could do is:
A) Create the project in Project Server 2007 by using the power of
templates. One item that should change is the schedule information of the
Portfolio Server 2007 project which typically have the phases or important
milestones, and have 1 additional task. In the templates on Project Server
represent the phases & milestones, and the worked out WBS under a placeholder
task.
Later link the newly created project with the project in Portfolio Server
2007. From that moment the project plan in EPM is linked to PPS/PPM.
By using that placeholder task, the schedule of the project in PPS is not
screwed up.

B) Another approach is build your own interface to for creating the initial
project plan in EPM (Project Server). This interface could rely on custom
fields/attributes of the project in Portfolio Server, and using PSI to select
a template, create the project, insert the milestones/phases of the project
of Portfolio Server and save the project plan. You still have to link
manually the project stored in EPM with the project in PPM/PPS since the API
of PPS is read-only.
If you are interested in this kind of interfacing, our company Exerti can
help you with it.

Hope this gives you some idea of possibilities.

Grtz, Kurt
