Project level resource loading and task level time sheets

Andrew Stokes

Hi

I would like to publish some projects where resources can record time spent
on outline tasks (used to manage workpackages aka unit process modules).
There are a number of resources on this project and I would like all
resources to have the ability to record work on any of these outline tasks
but I am not interested in assigning resource loading at this level, I just
want to assign resource loading at the project level (e.g resource A at 30%
for the period of the project).

Can anyone recommend the easiest way to achieve this.

hi Andrew,

I assume that you use Project Server 2007. ( Please let me know if this is
not the case, since what I am about to write is different in 2003).

PS2007 gives you the abillit to use a Timesheet functionality which allows
you to enter time against projects on a project level, but the timesheet does
not automatically update your project progress.

This is one way of entering time against a project, BUT as a second step
your staff would also need to update the task that has been assigned to them,
this is where you use the task update functionality. Only staff that has
been assigned to a task is cabable of updating this task. Essentially it
means, if you want your team to update tasks you will need to assign them to
the task.

So in a nutshell:
you can enter time against a project on a project level, but need to have
some kind of process in place to update your tasks seperatly.

Or you assinged all team members to the tasks so that they can update this
project task.

What I would do is think exactly what you need to achieve, then you will be
able to answer if you like to use timesheets or task updates.

Please let me know if you have more questions, i know it can be confusing to
understand the difference between task update and timesheet entry

Andrew:

What you can do is model the project to the level you wish to use for
tracking.Assign Team resources to the tracking tasks and use a resource plan
to reserve your resource loading. This ought to address your scenario
leveraging some of the nifty new features in Project Server.

would not be easier to tweak server side ??

ServerSetting=>Task Settings and Display=>"Time entry by Timesheet only.
Users will sync to update tasks. "

pd:

This setting restricts time entry to timesheet only, so it doesn't address
the situation Andrew was discussing. It also has the consequence of locking
the remaining work field which makes it farily useless for many situations.
